🦠 Important Information: Measles (MMR) Outbreak

What’s Happening?
There has been a rise in measles cases across the UK, particularly in London, the North West & Birmingham. Measles is a highly infectious illness that can cause serious complications, especially in young children and vulnerable adults.

⚠️ What to Look Out For

Measles often starts with symptoms similar to a cold, followed by a rash. Key signs include:

  • High fever
  • Cough, runny nose, and red eyes
  • A rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body
  • Feeling generally unwell or tired

If you or your child develop these symptoms, especially after recent travel or contact with someone who has measles, please do not come into the surgery without calling first.

🧑‍⚕️ What You Should Do

Call your GP practice first before attending in person.

Avoid public places to reduce the risk of spreading the infection.

Check your vaccination status – the MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps, and rubella.

Children should receive two doses: one at 12 months and one at 3 years and 4 months.

Adults who haven’t had two doses can still be vaccinated – there’s no upper age limit.

💉 Protect Yourself and Others

  • If you or your child have missed an MMR dose, contact us to arrange catch-up vaccination.
  • New patients and those recently arrived from abroad should have their immunisation history checked.
  • Post-natal women should ensure they are fully vaccinated.
  • All patients and staff are encouraged to be fully protected.

📞 Need Help?

Please do not visit the practice in person if you suspect you or your child may have the measles or has come into close contact with some who has a confirmed case of measles. If you’re unsure about symptoms or vaccination status, please contact the practice. We’re here to help and can advise you on what to do next.
